If you've been chronically ill for any length of time, you've probably been given advice that sounded helpful — but made things harder.
Let's talk about five of the biggest myths. Use what helps. Leave the rest.
Myth 1: “You just need a good routine.”
Routines are built for stable energy. Most of us don't have that. When your symptoms change day to day — or hour to hour — a fixed routine becomes another thing you're failing at.
What to do instead: Build a response system, not a schedule. Ask: “What do I need right now, based on how I actually feel today?” That’s the foundation of Colors of Calm™ — and it's the start of something that actually works.
Myth 2: “Resting more means doing less.”
Rest isn't failure. It's not laziness. And it's not a reward you have to earn. Rest is part of what makes anything else possible.
What to do instead: Practice stopping before you're depleted — not after. If you could do more but you stop anyway, that's not weakness. That's wisdom.
Myth 3: “Positive affirmations will help you feel better.”
Some affirmations make things worse — especially on hard days. When "I am thriving" feels like a lie, repeating it can increase shame and disconnect.
What to do instead: Use R.E.A.L. Affirmations™ — believable, body-safe statements that feel true even on a hard day. Read more about how they work here.
Myth 4: “If you crash, you pushed too hard — you should have known better.”
This one is cruel and it's not true. You were doing your best with the information you had. Shame doesn't prevent crashes. Self-awareness does.
What to do instead: Notice your early signals — not to punish yourself for missing them before, but to gently catch them sooner next time. No blame. Just data.
Myth 5: “Good tools work on good days.”
If a tool only works when you're feeling well, it's not actually a tool for you. It's a tool for a version of you that doesn't need help.
What to do instead: Test everything on a hard day first. The From Flare to Flow™ program was built on exactly this principle — if it doesn't work on a hard day, it doesn't count as support.
R.E.A.L. Affirmation: "I don't need a perfect system. I need support that fits today."
You can stop here. 💛
Optional: If you'd like a simple tool for identifying what kind of support you need on any given day, my Colors of Calm™ resource might be a good fit. No pressure — save it for when it feels right.
